OVERVIEW:

Located at a distance of 72 kilometers from Siliguri and situated at the lap of the eastern Himalayas, Dhupjhora is a hidden gem of Dooars. The special attraction of the place is the tree houses or Gachbaris that offer you an opportunity of feeling the excitement of staying at a treehouse. The Dhupjhora Elephant Camp will allow you to observe elephants in their natural ambiance, with all their natural impulse and royal majesty. Dhupjhora is quite an adventurous place with its wildlife. It allows you to have a Safari on an elephant that will take you inside the dense Gorumara forest to explore nature in its purest form. This place secured its recognition as an elephant camp as Pilkhana. The elephant stable of National Park is situated nearby.

WILDLIFE OF DHUPJHORA: 

The journey towards Dhupjhora will give one ample opportunity of discovering the changing landscape comprising fresh tea gardens, paddy fields and semi-tropical vegetation. The view from the coronation bridge showing Teesta River meandering around the mountain valley is a treat for the eyes. Situated in the banks of the river Murti, the vegetation of Dhupjhora specially includes Shal trees which are used for preparing a unique lodging system known as the tree houses also.

Enriched with flora and fauna, the place is a natural home for elephants and beautiful birds. The Gorumara National Park is not far away from Dhupjhora. A safari into the forest will bring the travelers closer to Asiatic one-horned-rhino, 193 species of birds, 27 species of fishes, 7 species of turtles along with huge numbers of elephants.

Elephant safari from Dhupjhora is a must activity for the tourists. Exploring the tall grasslands and dense forest riding on the back of a majestic elephant is a one-time opportunity for travelers. If you have an urge for mystery and adventure, an elephant safari is for you. Not only it allows you to explore the beautiful vegetation of the forest but also gives you the opportunity to see the rare species of birds and other animals in their natural habitation. 

WATCH TOWER VISIT:

Dhupjhora has its own watchtower, Chandrachur Watchtower which allows the travelers to have an overall view of the forest and the vast grassland that surrounds the tower. A few salt pits are situated around the watchtower and these are maintained by the forest officials. The salt beds attract the animals of Gorumara National Park. The animals are most likely to gather near the salt beds attacked by the salt and the travelers might get a glimpse of a One-horned Asiatic Rhino and Bison or Guar.

As Dhupjhora is situated on the banks of the Murti river, travelers can easily enjoy the blissful view of sunrise and sunset from the river bed. The fading light of the sun dying on the sandy shore of the river creates a picturesque view. The view of elephants bathing in the sparkling water of river Murti has left many spectators spellbound.

GACHBARI OR TREEHOUSE AT DHUPJHORA:

One of the greatest attractions of the place is staying in a treehouse which is a unique lodging facility arranged in a hut situated on trees. The wooden structure or hut is decorated with thatched bamboo at about two and half storied height supported by two large saal trees. Inside the hut is also luxurious and romantic too. There are six other cottages in the place. There is a lush green lawn in front of the cottage.

CARPET FACTORIES AND CULTURAL PROGRAMS: 

Travelers get to see the culture and heritage of the local people. The tribal people often arrange special folk dances and songs to welcome the travelers. Travelers can enjoy their life in festivity and mirth and observe the unadulterated tribal culture and its specialties.

The travelers can visit the old carpet factory situated nearby. A walk through the long grasslands and the fresh tea gardens enjoying the serenity and peace of nature is an experience you don’t want to miss.

The best way to visit the place is by trains like Saraighat express, Teesta Torsa express, and Kanchankanya express. The closest railway station to Dhupjhora is Chalsa. Many major trains don’t have a stoppage at Chalsa. The most convenient railway station is Malbazar. From Malbazar railway station it hardly takes 45 minutes to reach Dhupjhora Elephant Camp. 

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best time to visit the camp is from October to March. The camp remains closed during the rainy season. 

DHUPJHORA SIGHTSEEING:

Gorumara National park (9.6 km away):

The forest is well known for the Asiatic one-horned-rhino. Apart from the rhino, there are ample numbers of leopards, elephants, Indian bison, deer, python, Malayan giant squirrels, etc.

Chalsa (10 km away):

Chalsa is a small town at the foothills of the Himalayas bordering Dooars. There are two major wildlife sanctuaries bordering Chalsa, namely, Gorumara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. These sanctuaries are rich in biodiversity and are home to a wide range of wild animals, reptiles, birds, butterflies, and exotic trees.

Chapramari (16 km away):

Surrounded by dense forest and flowing streams, Chapramari dishes out a beautiful and panoramic view of nature. The solitary greenery of Chapramari always wonders the tourists with its wide range of wildlife. Elephants, gaurs, leopards, chital, sambar, barking deer, and wild boars are the very common sights of the forest. 

Jaldapara (66.5 km away):
